2022-2023 Zwift Grand Prix Results – Men

Here we go. The first official season of the Zwift Grand Prix (“ZGP”). After the 2021-2022 season, Zwift got rid of the Premier Division, which had just been an elite division sitting on the top of the ZRL structure. ZGP was created as a separate, standalone elite race series, in part because Zwift wanted to be able to experiment with unique, esport-specific race formats. The success of these were… well… hit or miss for the first year. After NeXT had won the two premier division seasons in 2021-2022, we returned to Canyon ESport (now Coalition Alpha) domination.

Platform: Zwift

Dates: 09.23.2022 – 03.03.2023

Summary of Rules: Hopelessly complex. Because each stage had a unique format, we explain each at the top of the race results for that stage below. Key difference though is that the structure of this first ZGP season was fundamentally different in that after the “regular season” of the first six stages, the top five teams advanced to the finals, and the winner was awarded to the team that won that race. 12 teams participated, and for team results only the top 10 teams in each stage received points, going from 25 to one.

Results*

Includes only those riders who scored race points in the tour. GC results do not factor in the Stage 6 Last Team Standing race.

Parcours Picker (5 Races)

09.23.2022

Stage 1 consisted of five separate “tiny” races. For each race, teams had to select a single rider, and riders could only participate in one race. So each team had to use five riders across the stage, and there were 12 riders in each race. The races played to different rider strengths and offered varied point amounts. Below, results are organized by the total number of points each rider scored.

Team Elimination Omnium (3 Races)

10.07.2022

Oh boy, the complexity. Stage 2 was a similar format to what Zwift would eventually use for the UCI World Championships later this season. But the ZGP version, being a teams points race, was even more complicated. Basically, this stage consisted of three races. The field started with 60 riders for the first race (12 teams, 5 riders each). The first 30 riders scored 20 points each and advanced to the second race; 31-50 scored 20 down to one but were eliminated; while everyone else was eliminated. In the second race, the top 10 received 21 points each and advanced to the final race, with the next 20 eliminated riders also receiving points going down to one. The final round was an elimination race, with the last place rider across the line eliminated at every intermediate sprint. The winner received nine points, with each subsequent place receiving one less down to the 10th place rider receiving nothing. To make it even more complicated, there were “golden tickets” at intermediate points in the first two races, which awarded no points but guaranteed advancing to the next race. There were five of these in the first race and three in the second race, meaning that to advance you needed a top 25 finish or golden ticket in the first race and top seven or golden ticket in the second. One final nugget: different sources describe the points system slightly differently, so we aren’t even sure this is 100% right. We are so so sorry.

Squad Skirmish (6 Races)

10.21.2022

Another complicated one. Stage 3 had three races in the “qualifier” round. Teams had five riders each. Each rider could only race in one qualifier race, and no more than two riders from each team could be in a race. So in practice, each team had two riders in two of the qualifying races, and one in the third. Points were awarded in each race, and the top five teams advanced to the finals, another three race series using a similar overall format. Points reset for the finals, and the team with the most points in those three races won the stage.

Team Elimination Omnium (3 Races)

12.02.2022

The format here was similar to Stage 2, except that there were intermediate sprint points available in the first two stages; there were no golden tickets; and 12 rather than 10 riders made it through to the final race, based on the top three at each intermediate sprint in race two.

Last Team Standing (1 Race – Watopia Hilly Loop)

01.13.2023

29.4 km/384m

Team-centric, elimination format. Six intermediate elimination points in the race. For the first, any team without a rider in the top nine is eliminated. For the second, any team without a rider in the top eight, and so on and so forth down to the final segment where teams must place a rider in the top four to remain. If multiple teams remain in the race after that last intermediate point, then the first ten riders across the line receive 10 points down to one point, and the team with the most points wins. Because of how team-centric this race is, we have scored it as we would a team time trial.

Points Hunter (1 Race – Scotland: The Muckle Yin)

03.03.2023

23.7 km/282m

Similar to Stage 4. Simple format, with points available across the course. The big catch is that once a rider scores a point, they are eliminated from the race. Team with the most points in the stage is crowned the inaugural Zwift Grand Prix champion!
